In 1998, Global Tel Link a.k.a GTA deliberately programmed its hardware to over-charge customers and inmates calling their families from prisons and criminal justice facilities across the United States. As one of the largest providers of communication services to the criminal justice system, such actions went unnoticed for a long time. Recently, Louisiana Public Service Commission revealed a comprehensive report [click here: http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/securus-corrects-inaccuracies-in-global-tel-links-gtl-press-release-300282563.html] on the cheating practices of GTL. However, the report may go unnoticed; therefore, the CEO of Securus Technologies, Richard A. “Rick” Smith has promised to reveal important information to the public.
In an effort to educate public, Securus Technologies will highlight the report on PR Newswire’s website. According to Mr. Smith, Securus Technologies has vowed to reveal ill-practices in the criminal justice industry to reinstate its reputation as a trustworthy sector that is aware of the problems faced by our community. In the report, the Louisiana Public Commission cited multiple reports of infringement and unlawful practices of GTA while working on a contract for out-bound calls for PSC. Securus recently acquired a A+ rating from BBB.
The report highlighted how Global Tel Link programmed its communication hardware to inflate call charges. As such, the clock inside the telephone was programmed to add 15 or 36 seconds increments to the original call time. In addition to the inflated charges, it was also revealed that the hardware was programmed to over-charge customers allowing the company to get reimbursement based on call charges that were over the PSC prescribed rates. As if this was not enough, GTL also got reimbursement for charging customers more than the standard charges displayed by the company on its official rate-sheet. As a result, the Louisiana Public Commission has determined that GTL is directly responsible for approximately $1,243,000.
